Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around Indonesia's political decisions regarding tsunami relief efforts, particularly its refusal of U.S. military assistance. Participants explore the implications of these decisions on humanitarian aid and national security, as well as the motivations behind Indonesia's actions.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express disgust at Indonesia's refusal of U.S. military help, questioning the morality of allowing political agendas to interfere with humanitarian aid.
  • Others argue that Indonesia's decisions are understandable given national security concerns and the potential for ulterior motives from the U.S.
  • Concerns are raised about Indonesia restricting aid to areas with rebel activity, suggesting this could be a tactic to address internal conflicts.
  • Participants discuss the implications of not allowing U.S. military training flights in Indonesian airspace, with some viewing this as a reasonable security measure.
  • Some contributions highlight specific restrictions imposed by Indonesia on aid workers and military personnel, questioning the motivations behind these policies.
  • There is a call for a deeper understanding of the complexities involved, with participants noting the lack of information available to make definitive judgments.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus; multiple competing views remain regarding the appropriateness of Indonesia's actions and the implications for international aid and security.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the potential for missing assumptions about national security, the complexity of international relations, and the lack of clarity on the motivations behind Indonesia's restrictions on aid.

And it seems you just visited this thread to make obnoxious and sometimes personal comments, all the while butchering grammar to an extent you are barely legible.

Of course, sometimes things aren't as they seem. But then, sometimes they are.

 Okay guys, I am sorry, my fault, I shouldn't be fanning it.

This is what I think, Tumor criticises a lot, but only in a generic way, Canadians, Americans, the modern western culture etc. The bottom line is he does not get personal. So I would think none of us should be so small as to take offence. I wouldn't be upset if he says all Chinks are pigs, I will when and only when he calls me a pig.

Please could all of us cool down? The last thing the world needs any more is e-war.

Yes, he does, he did in this thread. Doesn't bother me, but I think its a shame we won't get to respond in kind.

I know what you old man will say, simply: Indonesian moslems bad and evil, americans the best people in the world.

Most people take jabs at their family rather personally you know. I'll use that as an example of a post that serves no purpose.

Trying to get this back on topic, I just read THIS
Not enough transportation
Augstburger said that despite a huge international relief operation involving military forces from a number of countries, there were still not enough helicopters and boats available to deliver the needed aid.

He said if that didn’t happen, things could become “very serious” in outlying areas.

“The food is here. We have to deliver the food. Stocks are being piled here (in Meulaboh),” he said.

Officials say one problem is the need for repeated air drops in the same area. With many villages completely wiped out, and others coping with an influx of refugees, a constant schedule of aid deliveries needs to be established to keep people supplied.
So there should be no question that what is needed is for Indonesia to allow the US military to set-up operations in such a way as to enable them to function at peak efficiency instead of forcing them to comply with destructive, politically motivated rules. People are starving and the government is more worried about fighter jets circling around miles off the coast than they are about getting the helicopters they need.

One final thought before this thread is locked:

I was thinking today that I may have missed the real reason for not wanting US Navy ships off the coast of Indonesia. The Indonesian government may not want their citizens to see them. It could be another form of propaganda - they don't want their people to see the enormity of the US aid and have a favorable opinion of us.
