AI Thread Summary
A participant in a PhD interview workshop discusses their experience with two positions, noting a quick rejection from one and no response from the other after nearly two weeks, despite a 10-day deadline for offers. The individual considers whether to email the contact to inquire about their status in the selection process. The consensus suggests that reaching out is advisable, emphasizing the importance of expressing continued interest without directly asking if they are still being considered. Not following up could be interpreted as a lack of enthusiasm for the position.

I attended a workshop for phd interviews a couple of weeks ago and basically had two positions I was gunning for. A few days after the workshop I got an immediate rejection from one, but the other has yet to email me almost 2 weeks after. The deadline for accepting/declining offers was supposed to be 10 days and there are 3 people (including myself) going for 2 phd positions.

Should I email the guy and ask if I'm out of the running? Would doing so destroy my chances in case the guy sending out the offers has just been extraordinarily lazy?

On the contrary. E-mail him and make clear that you are still interested. (Don't ask if they still consider you). Not following up may be regarded as lack of interest.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
