SUMMARY

When applying to graduate school for Astronomy or Astrophysics, a degree in Physics is generally preferred over Applied Physics. Admissions committees focus on the specific coursework completed, emphasizing the importance of foundational knowledge in Physics. While Applied Physics is not detrimental, it may not provide the same level of preparation for advanced studies in Astronomy/Astrophysics as a traditional Physics degree.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of core Physics concepts and theories
  • Familiarity with graduate school application processes
  • Knowledge of Astronomy and Astrophysics fundamentals
  • Awareness of course requirements for graduate programs
NEXT STEPS
  • Research specific graduate programs in Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Review coursework requirements for Physics and Applied Physics degrees
  • Explore foundational topics in Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Investigate the impact of undergraduate degree choices on graduate school admissions
USEFUL FOR

Prospective graduate students in Astronomy or Astrophysics, academic advisors, and undergraduate students considering their degree paths.

Physics.

But Applied Physics isn't terrible. Grad school applications are reviewed on the course level, so it will more come down to how well the material you covered prepares you for your intended studies.
