Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of creating an Iron Man suit using current technology, focusing on components such as the arc reactor, jet boots, and the suit's overall mechanics. Participants explore theoretical and practical aspects of the suit's design, including power sources, materials, and technological limitations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants argue that while auxiliary components of the suit could be developed, the core power source, akin to the arc reactor, does not currently exist.
  • Others suggest that jet boots would require a fuel pack, similar to historical jet packs, and highlight concerns about weight and shielding for the reactor.
  • One participant mentions that hydraulics could provide super strength, but questions remain about the overall power plant and thrust mechanisms.
  • There are discussions about inertial dampeners, with some stating that they are unnecessary due to comic book physics, while others see them as a significant challenge.
  • Concerns are raised about the compactness of the suit and the practicality of integrating all necessary systems, such as heat dissipation and propellant storage.
  • Some participants speculate on the potential for future advancements in technology that might make such a suit possible in 10 to 20 years, particularly in exoskeleton development.
  • Questions are posed about the realism of the suit's capabilities, including its energy source and the implications of its design on human physiology.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the power source is a significant barrier to creating a realistic Iron Man suit. However, there are competing views on the feasibility of other components and the timeline for potential advancements in technology.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include unresolved questions about the practicality of integrating various systems, the assumptions about future technological advancements, and the dependence on fictional elements from comics and movies.

Perhaps the power plant deserves a thread all its own.

Never mind. Looking below this post at similar discussions I see the power plant already has a thread of its own.

thats pretty awsome

I like the Marvel movies in general - I was a fan of comics growing up and am still a fan of the way they can inspire the imagination. Sci-Fi is something I enjoy for the same reason - science needs fertile imaginations, I think. To add my answer to the original question, it isn't currently possible to build an Iron Man-style suit; or else I'm pretty sure we'd have several of them flying around, and the question would be how long it would take before the technology became declassified and available for commercial use
