AI Thread Summary
The discussion clarifies that there is a difference between accessing Physics Forums via "www.physicsforums.com" and "https://www.physicsforums.com." Users may not be automatically signed in on the latter due to the browser storing sign-in information by URL. This can lead to issues when navigating between the two formats, requiring users to sign in again if they switch from "www." to "http://." Additionally, users with a gold membership may encounter different advertising experiences depending on the URL used. Understanding this distinction is important for seamless access to the forum.

I would bet that you used the "Remember me" feature when you signed in at www. but not when you signed in at http://

Your browser stores this sign-in information by URL and is not smart enough to know that those are the same sites.

Ah, I hadn't even considered that. That is def what happened.

It does cause a problem sometimes when you are logged in as "www." and click on a link that is "http://" .[/URL] Well, only if you want to reply to the "http://" link where you would have to sign in again or reload it with the www added. Also you will get the ads if you're gold, etc.

Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
