Making a replacement Magnetic coil for my ride-on lawnmower

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on creating a replacement magnetic coil for a ride-on lawnmower, specifically a John Deere LX280, which uses a 12V, 80-watt coil for clutch engagement. Participants emphasize the importance of measuring the wire diameter, length, and circumference of the winding, and suggest reusing the old core after unwinding it. Clarification is sought on whether the coil engages or disengages the clutch and if it is a magnetic clutch or a solenoid. A reference to a similar part, the Warner TG2000, is provided, along with a link for purchasing. Overall, the conversation revolves around the technical details needed for the coil replacement and potential part compatibility.

Welcome to PF.
You will need to measure the wire diameter and measure the length and circumference of the winding.
You could re-use the old core after unwinding and counting the number of turns on the faulty coil.

It is cast in plastic so can't really get to it

What is the electro-magnet supposed to do on the mower ?
What is make and model of your mower ?

Please drag and drop a photo.jpg of the dead solenoid onto your next post.
Post the part number and any markings on the dead solenoid.

What material is the core of the solenoid made from, solid iron or laminated ?
We will need to know approximate size.

Maybe other mowers use a similar solenoid. What other mowers look like yours?

It is for the clutch to engage. On a john deere lx280 see attached

When energized does this coil engage or disengage the clutch? Is this a multiplate clutch ? The photos are not self explanatory to my eye.

Oh is this a magnetic clutch? I was thinking solenoid.

Maybe this is equivalent to the Warner TG2000. Price is lowest I found $130.
