AI Thread Summary
A recent sighting of a bigfoot-type creature in Glastenbury, Vermont, has sparked discussion about the timing of such encounters, particularly their prevalence at dusk rather than during daylight hours. Participants in the discussion note that dusk is a common time for wildlife activity, including deer, suggesting that these sightings may be related to natural animal behavior. Some argue that the frequency of sightings at night could imply that these creatures are more likely to be wild animals rather than an intelligent species. However, references to literature on bigfoot sightings indicate that encounters can occur both day and night. The conversation also humorously speculates about the nature of the sightings, with one participant jokingly attributing a sighting to a celebrity. Overall, the dialogue reflects a mix of skepticism and intrigue regarding bigfoot sightings and their timing.

Why is it that these things always pop up right at dusk? How come you never see them at 3pm in the afternoon on a bright sunny day when they're visible?

This is consistent with the behavior of other wild animals. For example, dusk and dawn are the most likely times to see a deer. Conversely, maybe it takes all day to get on those d*mned monkey suits!

Which actually contributes more to the theory that these are more likely wild animals than intelligent "bigfeet".

Actually, they do get spotted during the day. If you read anyone of John Green's books which are full of accounts collected from people who've had sightings, you come away with the impression that they are spotted as much at day as at night.

The four other Vermont sightings mentioned in the story were probably daytime ones since the people seemed to be doing things you wouldn't be doing in the woods at night, especially the woman who was reading.

It was actually Shaq O'Neill hoofing it barefoot to his local Burger King.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
