AI Thread Summary
Micromass and Science Advisors have implemented several changes to the math forums, including renaming "Calculus & Analysis" to "Calculus" and creating a new forum for "Topology and Analysis." The "Geometry and Topology" forum has been renamed to "Differential Geometry," and descriptions for several forums, including "linear and abstract algebra" and "Set theory," have been updated. Additionally, the "number theory" forum has been merged with "linear and abstract algebra." Suggestions were made to either rename the Linear & Abstract Algebra forum to include number theory or revise its description to prevent confusion about where to post number theory questions. Overall, these adjustments aim to enhance clarity and organization within the math forums.

Micromass and several Science Advisors have been working hard to further refine our math forums. Here are the changes:

  • We renamed "Calculus & Analysis" to "Calculus" and changed the description.
  • We add a new forum "Topology and Analysis"
  • We renamed "Geometry and Topology" to "Differential Geometry" and changed the description.
  • We changed the descriptions of the "linear and abstract algebra" and "Set theory" forums.
  • We merged "number theory" with the "linear and abstract algebra" forum.

Over the next few weeks staff will be moving threads into the new "Topology and Analysis" forum.

I suggest that either the Linear & Abstract Algebra forum be renamed to include number theory in its title, or that the description be changed to include number theory. Otherwise, a member probably would choose to post number theory questions in the General Math forum, since its description (For any math topics not applicable to the categories below. High-school Mathematics) seems seems to fit such questions.

The Linear & Abstract Algebra forum had its description changed to include number theory, but in a somewhat hasty way. I wonder if it would be possible to change
Vector spaces and linear transformations. Groups and other algebraic structures along with Number Theory.
to
Vector spaces and linear transformations. Groups and other algebraic structures. Number Theory.
It seems to me that it would be better phrased, and more in the style of the other forums' descriptions.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
This came up in my job today (UXP). Never thought to raise it here on PF till now. Hyperlinks really should be underlined at all times. PF only underlines them when they are rolled over. Colour alone (especially dark blue/purple) makes it difficult to spot a hyperlink in a large block of text (or even a small one). Not everyone can see perfectly. Even if they don't suffer from colour deficiency, not everyone has the visual acuity to distinguish two very close shades of text. Hover actions...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
