Middle-Aged Man Embraces Lycra for Commuting

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the experience of a middle-aged man who recently started a new job that allows him to cycle approximately 10 miles each way to work. He purchased a new bike, equipped with carbon forks and hydraulic disc brakes, to preserve his nicer road bike. The topic of mid-life crises is humorously addressed, with the man joking about the societal stereotypes associated with middle age, such as buying Porsches and having affairs. He reflects on a previous year of cycling to work, noting it was a positive experience, but acknowledges that working from home has diminished his motivation to cycle regularly now.

A "middle aged man in lycra" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10965608

The new job means I can cycle about 10mi each way to work.
Ok so I did buy a shiny new bike (although only carbon forks - but it does have hydraulic disk brakes) and I only bought it so I wouldn't wear out my nice road bike.

I did ask my wife about mid-life crisis, Porsches and mistresses - and apparently I'm allowed to look at Porsches all I want!

A few years back I cycled to work for a year. Probably the best I could have done! Now I work from home, so the motivation really isn't there...

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
