Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around participants sharing their scores from a quiz related to identifying authors of science books. The focus is on personal experiences with the quiz, including guesses and familiarity with the material.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • Participants report varying scores, with some indicating they guessed on many questions, such as one participant who scored 8 out of 15 and noted they guessed correctly only a couple of times.
  • Another participant achieved a score of 10 out of 15, also mentioning that about half of their answers were guesses.
  • One participant suggested that the quiz could be improved by including additional information about authors on book covers, indicating a potential oversight in the quiz design.
  • Several participants expressed satisfaction with their scores, with one stating that their score of 11 out of 14 reflects basic knowledge for someone passionate about physics.
  • Another participant noted a score of 6 out of 15, indicating a lack of familiarity with the subject matter.
  • Scores varied widely, with some participants achieving perfect scores of 15 out of 15, while others scored as low as 5 out of 15, expressing a need to read more books.
  • One participant remarked that a high score might not necessarily reflect extensive scientific knowledge but could relate more to familiarity with popular science or "scientific gossip."
  • Humor was present in the discussion, with playful banter about the identity of "Einstein" and references to fictional characters.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally shared their individual scores and experiences with the quiz, but there is no consensus on the implications of these scores or the effectiveness of the quiz itself.

Contextual Notes

Some participants expressed uncertainty about the authors and books included in the quiz, indicating a possible limitation in their knowledge base.

I got 8 out of 15. Not great, but, I think reasonably good. I only guessed correctly a couple of times, and on the ones that I got wrong, I was very much guessing.

Surprisingly, I got 10/15.
About 1/2 guesses.

@Greg Bernhardt: The 4th book has one of the alternatives giving his opinion on the book on the front cover, effectively ruling him out as the author. You may want to cover this name as well.

11/14, because one question I did not answer by mistake. I am happy, as these 11 are the basic knowledge for someone passionate about physics.

13 points out of 15. I have some kind of "obsession" with books and authors but there is always room for improvement!

8/15 I was surprised by a few that I got wrong.

12/15 I either knew them or I didn't. Have read 4, read into another 2.

A high score might not necessarily indicate extent of scientific knowledge, it might be more scientific gossip and pop science.
