Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the availability of the student version of PSpice, a circuit simulation software, and alternative options for students and educators in academia. Participants explore potential solutions and alternatives for circuit simulation tools.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Technical explanation, Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express concern about the lack of a student version of PSpice and question what academia will do in response.
  • One participant mentions an active link for downloading PSpice and suggests that textbooks may still include the software.
  • Alternatives to PSpice are proposed, including LTSpice/SwitcherCAD III, which some participants have found satisfactory.
  • Another alternative mentioned is gEDA, which is noted for its schematic and layout capabilities, as well as its simulation features.
  • A participant humorously suggests trying a torrent version of PSpice, indicating a less formal approach to obtaining the software.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best alternative to PSpice, as multiple options are suggested, and there is no agreement on the implications of the absence of a student version.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention various licensing restrictions and the availability of software through textbooks or departmental resources, but these aspects remain unresolved.

What will academia do?

(well, you can still request a CD, i guess)

Yup, its unfortunate. But the link here seems active:

If you use PSpice for your courses, then the textbook should come with the student version of the software. Or maybe your department offers it as a download or something (not sure what the licensing restrictions are).

If you plan on switching analog circuit simulators, give LTSpice/SwitcherCAD III a try:

you can always try gEDA.

We've always used gEDA for making schematics and layouts, but I didn't know until now, that they also offered simulators!

This is what we've been using recently, and we're pretty happy with it so far.

Have you tried the Pspice torrent version ;)?
