AI Thread Summary
There is a strong consensus on the need for a dedicated sticky thread in the career guidance section addressing non-physics career options for physics PhDs, as this topic frequently arises in discussions. Participants note that a new thread on this subject appears weekly, indicating high interest and demand for information. The existing highlighted thread does not fully address the specific career concerns of those pursuing or holding a physics PhD. Clarification is made that the focus should be on alternative career paths outside of physics research. Establishing a sticky thread could streamline access to relevant resources and discussions.

I think there should be a sticky thread in the career guidance section about non-physics careers for a physics phd. I swear, a new thread pops us about that topic every week.

Yes, it's a very common topic. Sticky-ing it could be helpful.

Meanwhile, this thread does a good job addressing it:

It's been highlighted, so if you switch to "Highlighted Threads" it's easier to find.

That isn't exactly what I am talking about.
That thread is about "Can I get a physics PhD w/o a physics degree from undergrad"
I'm talking about "I am getting/am planning to get a physics PhD but what can I do for a career besides physics research"
I hope that clears things up.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
