Bug Optimizing Forum Post Display: Finding the Ideal Posts Per Page Setting

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the recent change in the forum's post display settings, specifically the removal of the "20 Posts Per Page" option, which now defaults to the forum's preset. This change likely aims to reduce server load by displaying fewer posts, which minimizes database activity. Users express frustration over needing to load more pages to view previous posts, while some believe that showing only a few posts is inefficient. A balance is suggested, with many preferring to see around 10 to 15 posts per page for optimal viewing. The community awaits further clarification from Greg regarding the rationale behind these adjustments.

In the Thread Display Options section, the picklist has two options - "Use Forum Default" and "Show Posts Per Page". The second option used to say "Show 20 Posts Per Page". Because of the missing number, everyone has the forum default now. 20 was working yesterday.

We have to wait for Greg to comment - I would guess he changed it to ease the burden on the server. Lower number of the messages displayed means less database work.

Thanks Borek. I guess I'll have to load more pages to see all the previous posts.

Yes - but most people want to see just the new posts, so displaying more than just a few is a waste of resources.

I know a forum where only four posts are displayed per page - that's a nonsense if you ask me. 10 to 15 is usually enough.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
