Bots are autonomous computer programs that perform tasks without user control, often running without the user's knowledge. In this discussion, a user experienced computer issues due to spyware, which was identified and removed using a spybot program. The conversation highlights the potential dangers of malicious bots, such as spyware that collects personal data. There is also a suggestion that the term "bot" is too broad, with a preference for referring to harmful software as spyware. Overall, the discussion emphasizes the importance of recognizing and managing bots to protect computer security.

what are BOTS, my computer was locking up a lot, I was doing some research and found a spybot program that found some parasites on my computer, I zapped them and I am fine now. I found this interesting that I couldn't find them otherwise and was curious what uses they had and are there good ones to keep etc.

Basically a bot (robot) is like an autonomous computer program performing human like tasks without the need for you to control it, sometimes bots are installed and run without your knowledge, like the spyware bot that you were infected with was probably autonomously sending market research data of your browsing habits to some master computer.

EDIT: Bot is a very lose term I think a better description of the parasite software found on your machine is spyware, and I would just call the removal program software.

What mathematics software should engineering students use? Is it correct that much of the engineering industry relies on MATLAB, making it the tool many graduates will encounter in professional settings? How does SageMath compare? It is a free package that supports both numerical and symbolic computation and can be installed on various platforms. Could it become more widely used because it is freely available? I am an academic who has taught engineering mathematics, and taught the...
