AI Thread Summary
Users are experiencing various issues with the PF platform, including security error messages, problems accessing notifications, and notifications for already read messages reappearing. Refreshing the page often temporarily resolves these issues, but they tend to recur. Clearing the browser cache has helped some users restore normal functionality, although others still report ongoing problems. I've had at least one user contact me via PM about issues using PF today, and I'm also starting to see problems. I'm getting Security Error messages when trying to access my Notifications menu, and some other similar notifications trying to do Mentor stuff. At the suggestion of the error message, refreshing the page usually seems to help, but something is going on.

I'm using Firefox on Win10, and the user who complained to me had more issues with Edge than with Chrome.

Anybody else seeing any problems right now?

Yes for sure issues since about 5am this morning and the most severe ones have been fixed. Can you give more information on the security error?

I only see ...

Server.png

... but that was all. I had no problems responding, no problems creating a new thread, and no problems finding old threads via the search function.

Am I on a mirrored server due to my non-American IP?

It's like the site is having trouble auto-updating. I keep seeing notifications for PMs that I've already read (multiple times). When it gets into that state showing notifications for PMs and messages already read, and I click on the notification icon, I get this:

Indeed refreshing the page seems to clear it up for a while, but then it happens again.

Corrected via MSpaint and upload.

The first broken attempt was by Ctrl+V. If that helps.

That actually was counter-productive for me a few minutes ago when I tried it. When I restarted Firefox and went to PF, all the old notifications were re-activated.

Or do you mean sign all the way out of PF and sign back in?

BTW, in case it helps in the debug, when I click the Notifications bell icon for a new notification like your posts above, and I click the link in the notification about your new reply, I get sent to the top of the thread. Usually it takes me directly to your latest reply, not to the top of the thread.

  • #13
Also, here's another symptom: I got a notification for a new PM reply just now, but clicking into that notification showed me the PM conversation that I'd started but no reply. Refreshing the page showed me the reply that I had gotten the notification for.

Thanks for the hint. The alert function started to alert false information to me so I logged out and in. Now I have inherited all of @berkeman 's problems that I haven't had before.

My edit did not show on the cats and dogs post. A refresh fixed it

A few hours ago, I clicked on the notification bell to see the new ones (there were three, according to the number), and the PF home page was inside the "Alert" window! There were no notifications whatsoever. I double-clicked to open the notification page and just opened the PF home page.

I just forgot about PF and did something else. I did not log out or clear anything. I did not even close my browser. When I came back about half an hour later, the problem was solved.

You confused something here. The supposed user dialogue goes the other way:
"It doesn't work anymore and I swear, I didn't do anything."

Yeah, for some reason if I click on the mechanical engineering sub forum it just takes me back to the top of the main page. Every other one seems to be working fine.

I had this early on, and switching to another browser helped, making me think it's a browser cache issue.

Chrome on Windows 10:
  • "Like" a post, leave thread, return to thread and the "Like" is gone.
  • Select "New posts" to show unread posts, select "Mark Forums Read" (which returns immediately to main page without the usual delay), select "New Posts" again and it still shows all the same unread posts.

  • #22
Yes, strange things are afoot. I upvoted @Bill and it didn't show plus all the post times are off.

It is also not sorting posts by time

It is also not remembering when I have looked at threads.

How about when you refresh your screen? (I'm not sure how to do that on my phone, but I think I figured it out once or twice.)

  • #25
Took the screenshot, and logged on.
Bell showed 2 unread. Clicked on the bell, nothing showed up, and the bell went blank.
Clicked on the Moderator log, three posts showed up. Refreshed (F5), and the Moderator log showed empty.
Other weirdness before logging off, but did not take notes.

If it gets too annoying, I will clear the browser cache.

Clearing my browser cache fixed most things for me. We have some caching systems disabled and will turn them back on tomorrow which may help.

I cleared the cache, and it has returned to normal function.

EDIT: Well...Maybe not exactly normal.

I cleared the cache, it returned to normal function for about 20 minutes, and now it's getting flaky. Moderator log shows 16 after F5 reload. Bell sometimes shows 1, sometimes shows 0.

MTA after log off: Logged off, display said I was still logged on, then went to correct screen after F5.

MTA again after log off: This time it logged off properly.

New posts, under What's new, isn't updating for me. Hasn't been working since yesterday morning.

That one happened to me but I cleared it by logging out of PF and logging back in.

Edit: nope, actually it updated when I did that but doesn't seem to have done so since.

I am having alerts go wild. I read the alerts and get new ones that should have appeared before. Right now, I have an alert that does not disappear even if I go into the thread. Reload sometimes works, sometimes it does not. (Might be a cache issue from my side, I will investigate later).

Diagnosis: site deterministic chaos.

Yes I am getting most of the above too.

Lots of "Oops we ran into some problems."

Click on a notification, and get sent to the top of the page (even though the URL is the one for the post) with the wrong number for the unread messages. Refresh the page and it goes to the correct post, with the correct unread messages written on the bell.

Is it possible to clear the cache on a website-by-website basis? (Firefox on Win10) I don't think I want to wipe my whole browser cache if I can help it. Thanks.

  • #40
I cleared my browser cache last night, logged on this morning, and it's still flaky.

Yeah I think so, but I use Chrome. I clear mine about once a week. You hardly notice any difference. I'm not talking about cookies or saved passwords etc, just the file cache.

  • #42
Okay, it looks like I can do it on a site-specific basis. Wish me luck...

Hmm, that seems to have helped. I logged out of PF, cleared the cookies and cache as above, logged back in and so far I'm not seeing the need to keep refreshing my FF browser to get the latest posts. Fingers crossed...

Done, I can read my alerts now but Cats and Dogs thread is not up to date so there could be others like that for me. I am on a tablet now but my desk top at work was more problem free.

Not a show stopper ATM so I will update if everything resolves.
Cheers

When I click on "introductory physics homework help" and several other topics it does not go anywhere. It goes back to the main page. It looks like the topics I am following most often behave like this. Other topics open their page. The ones I have not accessed in a long time.
I already erased the cache on the browser with no effect. I tried the app and it does the same.

I'm working a lot better today, I think with no issues. Did you try the procedure in posts #42-43?

Yes. I erased the cache and the cookies. It did not help.

It works if I open it in an incognito tab and sign in. I tried to sign off and in again in a normal tab but I can't find where to sign off. It looks like I am signed in for life. 😉
