AI Thread Summary
To write physics equations using LaTeX on the forum, users should utilize tex or itex tags, especially if the equation starts with a begin statement. It's recommended to preview posts to ensure the LaTeX code displays correctly. Observing how other users format their equations can be helpful for learning. For inline equations, itex tags are used, while tex tags are for standalone equations. Proper tagging helps maintain compatibility with future forum upgrades.

Don't use picture tags, use the latex ones.

Although I believe we're on Mathjax now so you don't need tags?

You still need tex or itex tags. (It seems that you don't need tex tags if your latex starts with a begin statement, but I would recommend that you type the tags anyway, just to decrease the probability that your old posts will be broken by a future upgrade).

Optic27h, the best way to learn is to just click the quote button when you see a post that makes you think "I wonder how he did that". Try it on this one. If I want the equality E=mc^2 to appear in the middle of a sentence, I use itex tags. If I want it to appear on a line by itself, I use tex tags instead. For example, I could say that the formula E=mc^2 was found by Einstein.

Always preview before you post, so that you know that your LaTeX code works.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
