Processing of natural languages: where is work being done?

AI Thread Summary
A second-semester student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, is exploring the intersection of AI, machine learning, and natural language processing. The student has a project background in pattern recognition and is interested in developing a model that captures the complexities of natural language, focusing on the ambiguity in semantics and pragmatics. This model aims to enhance machine processing of natural language, particularly for semantic search applications. The student seeks guidance on identifying professors or departments with expertise in these areas, noting difficulty in finding relevant research interests among faculty lists. Another participant mentions Idilia as a company working in this field, indicating potential opportunities for collaboration or insight.

Hi,

I'm a 2nd semester student in the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. My fields of interest are AI, particularly machine learning, pattern recognition etc. I have done a project on pattern recognition in the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

I've some ideas about constructing a model of how natural languages (particularly in written form) represent and convey meaning, without making artificial distinctions between semantics and pragmatics and without discarding the level of ambiguity that is inherent (even essential) to our communication and even our cognition. I feel that tools from different fields of computer science and mathematics can be combined to quantify these ambiguous structures. Such a model can be useful to facilitate machine processing of natural language texts, like in semantic search. I want to work on a project regarding this during my 3 months summer vacation.

Can you tell me about professors who have worked on a related topic/departments which are known for working in related fields? I'm looking at the faculty lists of renowned Computer Science and Mathematics departments, but so far I haven't found anyone whose research interests seem to be in this direction, so a little nod in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Molu

Any help?

I know Idilia does this, just had an interview with them.

Bit Britain-specific but I was wondering, what's the best path to take for A-Levels out of the following (I know Y10 seems a bit early to be thinking about A-levels, but my choice will impact what I do this year/ in y11) I (almost) definitely want to do physics at University - so keep that in mind... The subjects that I'm almost definitely going to take are Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and I'm taking a fast track programme which means that I'll be taking AS computer science at the end...
After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
I'm going to make this one quick since I have little time. Background: Throughout my life I have always done good in Math. I almost always received 90%+, and received easily upwards of 95% when I took normal-level HS Math courses. When I took Grade 9 "De-Streamed" Math (All students must take "De-Streamed" in Canada), I initially had 98% until I got very sick and my mark had dropped to 95%. The Physics teachers and Math teachers talked about me as if I were some sort of genius. Then, an...
