Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the correct methods for connecting ammeters and voltmeters in electrical circuits. Participants explore the implications of connecting these instruments in series versus parallel configurations, focusing on theoretical understanding and practical consequences.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that an ammeter should be connected in series to measure current, while questioning the effects of connecting it in parallel.
  • Others assert that a voltmeter is typically connected in parallel to measure voltage, and they express uncertainty about the consequences of connecting it in series.
  • One participant mentions that connecting a voltmeter in series would not yield a voltage measurement because the voltage at two points would be the same.
  • Another participant emphasizes that an ammeter acts like a short circuit, while a voltmeter behaves like an open circuit.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the conventional connections for ammeters and voltmeters, but there is uncertainty regarding the implications of incorrect connections, particularly for the ammeter.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about circuit behavior and instrument characteristics are not fully explored, and there are unresolved questions about the specific outcomes of incorrect connections.

first if i were to connect an ammeter i would connect it in a series correct?
if i connect the ammeter in parallel what would happen?

second if i were to connect a voltmeter i would connect it in parallel?
if i connect the voltmeter in series what would happen?

An ammeter is basically a short circuit, and a voltmeter is an open circuit. Can you answer the questions for us now?

umm if you place voltmeter in series you would measure not voltage because, the voltage at two points are the same..

im not sure about ammeter tho...

Normally you place the voltmeter across whatever two points you want to measure the difference in voltage. You place an ammeter in series with a circuit branch to measure the flow of current through that branch.
