Last weekend I was in Roanoke, Virginia for yet another stamp show. Nearby I passed through Buchanan, where Google Maps lured me to investigate this inn, in an old railroad car.

It doesn't appear to be in operation any more. Kind of forlorn and unkempt outside, with no cars nearby except mine. The only sign of life was this caretaker (?).

With cappuccino at this Japanese restaurant in Jomtien I get good ideas from menu: Mackerel and avocado salad . Can't get any heathier than that- don't even try.

Some fall flowers shot with 55mm MicroNikkor at 1:2 reproduction ratio:

These were shot at f/11, but by opening the lens to f/3.5 I can strongly emphasize the small depth of field:

Unfortunately, the short working distance makes shooting insects tricky. I couldn't (safely!) get close enough to this one:

And, by the way, here is the Nikon page for the Photomicrography Competition winners throughout the years, with loads of fantastic photos. If you click on each year, there will be more photos coming up from that year.

My sister and brother-in-law came to visit me for a few days in San Diego last week. Good times were had by all. It was also an excuse for me to get off the davenport and get the rangefinder camera out of the house.

We started off heading to La Jolla Cove.

Figure 1. "Scuba divers and snorkelers at La Jolla Cove." Lens: Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.

L1003049.webp

Figure 2. "Stairs in 'Sunny Jim's Cave'" There's 145 slippery stairs on the way down to the grotto/cave opening. The fact that I'm totally out of shape became quite apparent on the way back up (there's also 145 slippery stairs on the way up). Lens: Thypoch Simera 28mm.

L1003068.webp

Figure 3. "'Georges at the Cove' in early afternoon." We had a drink or two at Georges. It's my favorite place to drink really good margaritas. Although it looks empty from the photo, there were plenty of people over by the windows (not shown). Lens: Thypoch Simera 28mm.

Figure 4. "Seagulls in Ellen Browning Scripps Park." Lens: Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.

L1003090.webp

Figure 5. "Children's Pool" Children's Pool was originally built as a place for children to swim and play, protected from the waves/surf. In somewhat recent times it was taken over by a bob of harbor seals. Today it's shared between seals and humans to some extent, depending on the time of the year (closed to humans from December-May -- You can still walk on the structure; you just can't go in the water during those months). Lens: Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.

Figure 8. "Woman with an undaunted pace." Lens: Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.

To be continued ...

... Continued from previous post.

'Still at La Jolla Cove for these pics.

L1003209.webp

Figure 1. "Untitled." I like this shot; I think there's something there. I just don't like the SUV hogging up the space. I almost didn't post it, and had planned to come back to this location in hopes that the SUV wasn't there next time, but I'm not sure when I'll get back. So here it is. (Just don't be surprised if I revisit this vantage point some day.) Lens: Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.

... More from my sister's and brother-in-law's visit, here in San Diego.

We dedicated much of one day to visit San Diego's Maritime Museum. While all three of us sail at least occasionally, my brother-in-law sails more than I do (by "sail" I mean wind-powered sailboats). So we were all pretty excited to re-visit the museum (they have actually already been to the museum before on a different visit, but the H.M.S. Surprise wasn't there for their first time).

L1003374.webp

Figure 1. Type IV PFD (Personal Flotation Device), sometimes called a lifebuoy or life ring. In the background is the San Salvador.

L1003338.webp

Figure 2. Narrow passageway within the USS Dolphin. The thing on the right is the "eye wash station" where you put your eyeballs in the green things to flush them out, just in case the need arises. Safety first! I like the door at the end of the passageway; the whole thing's very liminal looking.

L1003343.webp

Figure 3. Onboard the USS Dolphin. I presume this is the power distribution station (fuse station).

L1003363.webp

Figure 4. Windlass, aboard the Medea.

L1003379.webp

Figure 5. H.M.S. Surprise to the left, and Star of India to the right.

L1003333.webp

Figure 6. Stern of the H.M.S. Surprise. Originally the H.M.S. Rose, built as a fully functioning, (nearly) true-to-life replica of the original Rose, the ship underwent extensive modifications and renamed to the H.M.S. Surprise for the filming of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

L1003383.webp

Figure 7. Wheel of the H.M.S. Surprise. (The view here is facing aft.)

L1003385.webp

Figure 8. A broadside cannon aboard the H.M.S. Surprise. (I don't know if it's functional or not.)

L1003388.webp

Figure 9. Another broadside cannon on the H.M.S. Surprise. This one is pointing in the general direction of a neighboring restaurant, presumably to keep the chefs on their toes.

At this point we were getting a little hungry, so we decided to forgo touring the Star of India again (we did that for their last trip) and get some lunch instead at Little Italy (which is within walking distance). I plan on revisiting the Star of India again on my own in the future. I'll bring my camera, of course.

More to come later with different San Diego locations. ...
