Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around finding reference books on the ADM formalism in General Relativity, a topic not commonly covered in standard textbooks. Participants share their recommendations and experiences with various resources.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses the need for a book on ADM formalism, noting its absence in many textbooks.
  • A link to an arXiv paper is provided, suggesting it may contain relevant information.
  • Another participant mentions that Wald's book and Carlip's 2+1 Quantum Gravity book include discussions on ADM formalism.
  • A different participant recalls that MTW (Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler) has a dedicated chapter on ADM formalism, specifically chapter 23.
  • Another recommendation is made for M. Bojowald's book, "Canonical Gravity and Applications," as a useful resource.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the lack of coverage of ADM formalism in standard textbooks and provide various recommendations, but no consensus on a single best resource emerges.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations depend on personal experiences and may vary in their depth of coverage on the ADM formalism.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in General Relativity, particularly those looking for advanced resources on ADM formalism and canonical gravity approaches.

Hi there, I'm currently looking for a book on ADM formalism in General Relativity. I know that it's definitely not a method really taught so wouldn't be in many textbooks, but was wondering if anyone knew of any great books to use!

Thanks in advance

Wald or Carlip's 2+1 QG book also have a nice discussion on it. :)

MTW has a whole chapter devoted to it, I think chapter 23 or thereabouts. When I was studying the ADM formalism, I think I mostly went off Wald, MTW, and then the actual ADM paper.
