SUMMARY

For students learning structural analysis and finite element methods (FEM), software options include Autodesk Simulation Mechanical, Ansys, and Abaqus. These tools are widely available in academic settings, with many universities providing access to Ansys and Abaqus for hands-on experience. Additionally, SolidWorks and Autodesk offer student versions that include basic finite element analysis (FEA) capabilities. Familiarity with programming in C and experience with MATLAB and Mathematica can enhance the learning process.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of engineering statics
  • Familiarity with finite element methods (FEM)
  • Experience with MATLAB and Mathematica
  • Basic programming knowledge in C
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore Autodesk Simulation Mechanical for basic structural analysis projects
  • Learn how to use Ansys for advanced finite element analysis
  • Investigate Abaqus for its capabilities in structural simulations
  • Research SolidWorks student version features related to finite element analysis
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineering students, educators in structural analysis, and anyone interested in practical applications of finite element methods in engineering.

I'm in the third semester of mechanical engineering and I'm taking classes on engineering statics right now. Our professor said the he will give us a preview of finite element methods at the end of the semester.
Which softwares would you recommend for learning basic structural analysis? I mean, I'm learning all the theory at college but I would like to play with some simple projects and simulations while I learn. I know a little bit of C and already played with Matlab and Mathematica. I've also heard about Autodesk Simulation Mechanical.
So, any hints?

Most universties have Ansys, some have Abaqus. I believe both Autodesk and Solidworks student versions have some FEA in them.
