SUMMARY

In the interval (-2π, 2π), the sine function (sin θ) is increasing when θ is in the range of (-3π/2, -π/2) and (π/2, 3π/2). Conversely, the cosine function (cos θ) is decreasing when θ is in the range of (-π, π). Utilizing the unit circle is essential for visualizing these behaviors, as it clearly illustrates the relationship between the angles and the corresponding sine and cosine values.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of trigonometric functions: sine and cosine
  • Familiarity with the unit circle and its quadrants
  • Knowledge of the properties of increasing and decreasing functions
  • Basic skills in interpreting graphical representations of functions
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the unit circle to reinforce the relationship between angles and sine/cosine values
  • Learn about the derivatives of trigonometric functions to understand increasing and decreasing intervals
  • Explore the periodic properties of sine and cosine functions
  • Investigate transformations of trigonometric functions and their effects on graphs
USEFUL FOR

Students studying trigonometry, educators teaching trigonometric concepts, and anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the behavior of sine and cosine functions over specified intervals.

Over the interval (-2 pi, 2 pi), state where the following would be true:
a) sin theta is increasing
b) cos theta is decreasing

...Anyone know?

Draw a unit circle to help you.
Sin theta increases as the value of y increases. Cos theta increases as the value of x increases.
