SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of the "speed of dark" in relation to the speed of light, which is established at 186,000 miles per second. Participants argue that darkness, defined as the absence of photons and electromagnetic waves, does not possess a speed since it is not a physical entity that travels. The analogy of silence not overtaking sound further emphasizes that the speed of dark is a meaningless concept, as it does not exist in the same context as light or sound.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the speed of light (186,000 miles per second)
  • Basic knowledge of photons and electromagnetic waves
  • Familiarity with concepts of absence and presence in physics
  • Ability to comprehend analogies in scientific discussions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of photons and their role in light transmission
  • Explore the concept of vacuum and its relationship with light and darkness
  • Study the physics of sound waves and their propagation
  • Investigate philosophical implications of absence versus presence in scientific theories
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators in science, and anyone interested in the philosophical implications of light and darkness in the universe.

If light travels at 186,000 miles per second - and in theory nothing can travel faster. What would the speed of "dark" be? Dark occupies all space at the same time! It would seem to me anyway that "dark" would at some point catch up and pass light once the light source was extinguished.

Light is made of photons/electromagnetic waves they both travel at c. Darkness is the absence of photons/electromagnetic waves(This doesn't really happen in the universe ). There is nothing that travels so speed of dark is truly meaningless concept .

This is exactly like asking:
-what is the speed of silence is and why doesn't it overtake sound?
-what is the speed of no traffic and why doesn't it overtake traffic?
etc.
