AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges faced by an individual from Delhi who has a background in automotive design engineering but aspires to pursue an Integrated PhD in astrophysics. The main concern is a lack of confidence in mathematics, which is crucial for success in physics. The individual is preparing for GATE and JEST physics exams but struggles to apply mathematical methods to new problems despite understanding the concepts. A suggested resource for improving mathematical skills is "Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences" by Mary Boas, which has been positively reviewed by a participant who found it effective as a study guide. The emphasis is on the importance of strengthening mathematical foundations to succeed in physics.

I always have this near me. I've actually used it as my primary study guide for courses that used other textbooks...
For some reason, Boas just seems to click with how I think. I don't know if I'm alone in this though.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
