Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the subjects that high school students should focus on to prepare for a future career in aerospace engineering. Participants share their opinions on the importance of various subjects, including mathematics, physics, and communication skills.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant emphasizes the necessity of math, particularly calculus, and mentions its critical role in aerospace engineering.
  • Another participant highlights the importance of physics alongside math, suggesting that both are foundational for the field.
  • A different viewpoint suggests that chemistry is not essential unless one is specifically interested in combustion-related studies.
  • Some participants advocate for strong writing and communication skills, arguing that effective communication is crucial for engineers.
  • One participant lists a specific order of subjects, prioritizing calculus, physics, linear algebra, and computer programming, while also noting the significance of writing skills.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of math and physics, but there is some disagreement regarding the necessity of chemistry and the emphasis on communication skills. Multiple competing views remain on the prioritization of subjects.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying opinions on the relevance of specific subjects, and there are no definitive conclusions about the best subject combination for aspiring aerospace engineers.

Hi, I'm from Australia, in Year 9 of High School and planning on becoming an Aerospace Engineer. Next year is when everything starts to get serious and I've been thinking what I want to do with my life, and I eventually settled down on an Aerospace Engineer. So what subjects do i need to pick to become one?

Sorry if there is already a thread about this, if not then I appreciate all your opinions and answers!

Math. Physics. Math. Chemistry. Math. To top it off: math.

English

Remember how to do calculus, matrices, and all that. Math is an indispensable tool, but HowlerMonkey also underscores an equally important point: we need to be able to communicate effectively, succinctly, and with proper grammar and spelling.

In fact chemistry is not so much needed, unless you want to study only combustion. for now, you should focus only and only on math, specially calculus, integrals and if you have in your high school curriculum, matrices.

In order of importance:
Calculus, Physics, Linear Algebra, Computer Programming (C or FORTRAN)

Writing/communication skills are also important. I know plenty of engineers who write like they are mentally handicapped.
