SUMMARY

Switching from Civil Engineering to Mechanical Engineering in the second year is feasible, as many foundational courses overlap, including physics, chemistry, calculus, statics, dynamics, circuits, fluids, strength of materials, and CADD. However, students should consult their academic advisor to explore options for taking required courses during the summer to avoid repeating an entire year. This strategic approach can facilitate a smoother transition between disciplines.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of foundational engineering courses: physics, chemistry, calculus
  • Familiarity with engineering principles: statics, dynamics, circuits
  • Knowledge of design tools: CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting)
  • Awareness of academic advising processes in engineering programs
NEXT STEPS
  • Consult with an academic advisor regarding course transferability
  • Research summer course offerings in Mechanical Engineering
  • Explore the curriculum differences between Civil and Mechanical Engineering
  • Investigate career opportunities in Mechanical Engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students considering a transition from Civil to Mechanical Engineering, academic advisors, and individuals interested in understanding the curriculum overlap between engineering disciplines.

I'm currently in second year in Civil I want to do mech now but I'll have to start from 2nd year. That a good idea?

I would think that 1st and 2nd year courses of study in a civil or mechanical engineering program would be quite similar , like physics, chem, calc, statics, dynamics, circuits, fluids, strength of materials, and CADD, but I guess times have changed; perhaps you could take a couple of required courses during the summer rather than repeat an entire 2nd year if you wanted to switch. Check with your advisor.
