AI Thread Summary
Captain Langsdorff was the commander of the Admiral Graf Spee, a notable ship in naval history. The tallest type of grass is bamboo, which is recognized for its height and versatility. The L1A1 rifle is a variant of the FN-FAL. Monotremes, a unique group of mammals, are distinguished by their egg-laying ability, with the platypus and echidna being the only existing species. The Hale-Bopp comet's close approach to Earth led to a tragic incident involving a Beverly Hills cult.

ANSWERS

JCSD: 4) The monotremes are one of the three main divisons of mammals (the others being the marsupials and the placental mammals), distinguished from the other types by the fact they lay eggs! IIRC there are only two species of montremes duck-billed platypuses and another one whose name I cannot remeber (enchideas perhaps?). Platypus and two ant-eaters. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/monotreme.html

Evo: #7 modem - modulate/demodulate

Chroot: 8) I have the feeling this is a trick question, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes books. Hopefully that means he also invented the character. Nah, no trick this time.

Gokul: 12) Hale-Bopp. Just wear black pyjamas, white sports shoes, and a purple handkerchief over your head, and you too can catch a ride on the next passing alien spacecraft !

#7 modem - modulate/demodulate

12) Hale-Bopp ?

7) I could have sworn I read 'MODERN', not 'MODEM' - the caps help.

Ah, near enough. I didn't want to be narky about an "or".

It can be either modulate/demodulate or modulator/demodulator.

In the beginning (I was there) it was commonly referred to as modulate/demodulate.

Liar, Evo. You're not that old. :P

How long ago was that photo taken? You're looking pretty damn good there.

I'll go for the hardest one I know the answer to:

That was taken 3-4 years ago. I don't age (but there is a very nasty looking painting of me up in the attic).

Now I am wondering how many people aren't going to know what I am referring to and ask me why there is a nasty looking painting in my attic. This is how rumors get started.

Oscar Wilde would know what you're talking about. ;)

Oh, that reminds me. Some time ago I went on a spending spree, and picked up the entire works of Oscar Wilde, G. B. Shaw, Poe, Shakespeare, H. G. Wells, and a few others, all in hardcover. Also the complete Sherlock Holmes and a few others, but in softcover. Great stuff, but I'll never get through it all. And that reminds me, one of my friends still has my Oscar Wilde. Hmph.

The other is the spiny (or some such) anteater.

If you're not too picky...could you put me in your will ?

I think I might know #2 but I've got no clue about #1 (c'mon...these navy types think we should know about every world war captain and ship  Isn't it enough to know Doenitz ? The name Langsdorff sounds very familiar though) #5, #6 (I hope this isn't about the Gamera that comes in those lousy cartoon shows) and #11.

2) The tallest type of grass is what?

Silly. :P

Ok, so I wasn't just playing...

Never tried smoking it but without a doubt it can be used for pipe making (use a small nut such as cahoon for the bowl). There's a bunch of different things to be done with it, but it's a bear to chop.

My guesses :

6) According to the song, Gamera was a friend to all { ... } ? Geeks ?

9) Which Australian city is associated with Batman? Gotham ?

10) In the film Predator, which actor said "I ain't got time to bleed"? Damned if this isn't Jesse Ventura, in the early scene where the other dude lobs a grenade over the rock (behind which are baddies) that a bleeding Jesse is standing under.
Other dude : Dude ! You're bleeding ! (I paraphrase)
Jesse : I ain't got time to bleed.
Other dude : Okay, but have you got time to duck ?

<Don't look at me like that ! Who hasn't watched Predator a gazillion times ?

11) A kangaroo's testicles can retract into the abdominal cavity. When and why does this occur? The kangaroo does this when it senses a kick-in-the-b@!$ coming its way

Gokul: 11) A kangaroo's testicles can retract into the abdominal cavity. When and why does this occur? The kangaroo does this when it senses a kick-in-the-b@!$ coming its way. They retract into the cavity because kangaroos rip each other's balls off in fights. A particularly cruel way to ensure breeding rights.

Gokul: 12) Hale-Bopp. Just wear black pyjamas, white sports shoes, and a purple handkerchief over your head, and you too can catch a ride on the next passing alien spacecraft !
