SUMMARY

The discussion centers on structuring a theoretical project for an MPhys course, specifically addressing the expectations for the final report. The user seeks guidance on the necessary research, derivations, and presentation of information for a project worth 20 credits. Participants emphasize the importance of including substantial research and clear presentation of derived calculations, suggesting that a well-structured report typically spans around 30 pages. The conversation highlights the need for clarity in project titles and background material to guide the research process.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of theoretical physics concepts relevant to MPhys projects
  • Familiarity with academic research methodologies
  • Ability to perform mathematical derivations and calculations
  • Knowledge of report writing standards in scientific disciplines
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the structure of scientific reports in physics
  • Learn about effective literature review techniques for theoretical projects
  • Explore methods for presenting mathematical derivations clearly
  • Investigate common expectations for MPhys project submissions in the UK
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for MPhys students, academic advisors, and anyone involved in theoretical physics projects seeking to understand project structuring and reporting standards.

Hey guys.

I am new to this forum, and being a 3rd year student in an MPhys course I am slightly irate that I hadn't registered this forum before, or any other physics forums for that matter. Hence the username.

That said, I need all the advice I can get regarding a project I am doing for my 3rd year physics course.

Ok, let me explain: I am doing the MPhys course, so its not my final year, therefore my project is only worth half the credits (20 credits rather than 40) than people who are on the BSc course (because its their final year project).

The question is: Are there any UK forum members who could tell me the structure of the final report and also give me advice. For a theoretical project, do they expect a lot of research, derivations etc. and how do I present researched information?
I know these are such newbie questions but I haven't done a theoretical project before.

Would be nice if I could get a few contacts on MSN to help me out with these things.

Thank you for reading.

The project I did in my third year was pretty short: probably only about 30 pages. There wasn't too much research in there, just rehashing of a couple of papers I'd read, and a calculation or two filling in the gaps that papers notoriously leave. I'm guessing that this isn't your final year project, but that you have to do another project next year, right?

I'm not sure what other advice you're after. Do you have a project title, and suggested background material?
