SUMMARY

The discussion centers on troubleshooting the closure of a screen door when a main entry door is closed. It is established that the tight fit between the screen door and its frame traps air, which slows the closing speed of the screen door, preventing it from activating the latch mechanism. When the main door is open, air escapes quickly, allowing the screen door to close properly. Adjusting the fit or considering the air pressure dynamics can resolve this issue.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of door mechanics and closure dynamics
  • Familiarity with air pressure effects in enclosed spaces
  • Knowledge of screen door installation and adjustments
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for home improvement projects
NEXT STEPS
  • Research techniques for adjusting screen door fit and alignment
  • Learn about air pressure dynamics in door mechanisms
  • Explore solutions for improving latch activation in screen doors
  • Investigate common issues with storm doors and their impact on screen doors
USEFUL FOR

Homeowners, DIY enthusiasts, and anyone involved in home improvement or door installation who seeks to troubleshoot and optimize screen door functionality.

Greetings
I just installed a screen door. With the glass in the screen, I noticed that if I close the main entry door prior to the screen door being shut, the screen door will not close all the way and hit the latch.

If I try to close the screen door with the main door open the screen closes perfectly.

Yet, when I move the screen glass to expose some of the screen, the screen door closes perfectly.
Can someone explain what is going on

thanks

Sounds like the fit between the screen door and frame is nice and tight. You are trapping air between the door and screen door (perhaps storm door is closer). The trapped air slows the closing of the screen door so it does not have sufficient speed to activate the latch mechanism. If the door or screen door is open the air escapes fast enough that the screen door closes fast enough to get past the latch.
