AI Thread Summary
Water bears, or tardigrades, are remarkable microscopic invertebrates known for their extraordinary resilience to extreme environmental conditions. They can survive temperatures ranging from 150°C (300°F) to -200°C (-330°F), endure radiation levels up to 500,000 roentgens—far exceeding lethal doses for humans—and withstand high vacuum and electron bombardment. This incredible durability is attributed to their ability to enter a cryptobiotic state, significantly lowering their metabolic activity. Tardigrades have gained attention for their unique survival mechanisms, making them a subject of interest in scientific research and popular media.

Only on a recent program on the National Geographic Channel did I first come across these creatures. Water bears or tardigrades are tiny invertibrate creatures that are capable of withstanding astonishing extremes of atmospheric conditions by going into a low metabolic state known as cryptobiosis.

Water bears have been seen to survive at :

150 C (300 F) - hotter than boiling water
-200 C (-330F) - liquid nitrogen temps.
500,000 roentgen radiation dose - 500 roentgens kills an adult human
high vacuum, electron bombardment, and other crazy conditions

They're pretty nifty critters.

Every day we learn new things. Sometimes it's just a small fact or realization. No matter how trivial or random, let's start recording our daily lessons. Please start off with "Today I learned". Keep commentary to a minimum and just LIKE posts. I'll start! Today I learned that you clean up a white hat by spraying some cleaner with bleach on it (rinse before putting it back on your head!)
