Understanding Coulomb Force in Plasmas

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the coexistence of ions and electrons in a plasma state, specifically addressing the role of Coulomb force. It is established that while Coulomb force does exist between charged particles, the high energy levels and temperature in plasma prevent ions and electrons from recombining into neutral atoms. This phenomenon is crucial for understanding plasma behavior in various applications, including fusion energy and astrophysics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Coulomb's Law and electrostatic forces
  • Basic knowledge of plasma physics
  • Familiarity with ionization processes

This may be a pretty dumb question.
How is it possible for ions and electrons to coexist in plasma state. Shouldn't be there Coulomb force between them so that they would be bound together and become atoms?
