Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around understanding specific Earth parameters, including dip angle, dip latitude, invariant latitude, geomagnetic latitude, and L-shells. Participants express difficulty in grasping the meanings and implications of these terms, seeking deeper comprehension beyond basic definitions.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the meanings of dip angle, dip latitude, invariant latitude, geomagnetic latitude, and L-shells.
  • Another participant suggests that Wikipedia contains information on these topics but does not provide further clarification.
  • A participant acknowledges the limitations of Wikipedia and offers to explain specific passages if requested.
  • One participant advises that understanding these concepts requires practice in three-dimensional thinking, recommending manual work, diagram drawing, and model building.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the difficulty of understanding these concepts, but no consensus is reached on how to effectively clarify them. Multiple approaches to learning are suggested without resolution on the best method.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not settled on specific definitions or explanations for the terms discussed, indicating a need for further exploration and clarification.

Who May Find This Useful

Hi Ehabali! Welcome to PF!

You can find all these things in wikipedia … for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dip_angle"

Tiny-Tim,
Thank you very much

The problem is that I can't understand deeply what is meant by these expressions.
I read what is written in Wikipedia, but I still can't imagine it.

oooh, i don't think i can improve on several pages of wikipedia

is there any particular passage from wikipedia you'd like explained?

It takes a lot of practice to think in three dimensions.

Do the work manually, draw lots of diagrams, reproduces the ones in your book/on the net or build some simple cardboard models.
