Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a video of a pole vaulting incident where a pole breaks into three pieces during a competition. Participants explore whether this incident relates to the Feynman spaghetti problem, which involves the behavior of materials under stress.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the incident may be an example of the Feynman spaghetti problem.
  • Others express uncertainty about the video's content, questioning whether the pole indeed broke into three pieces.
  • A participant notes that the video shows the pole breaking in slow motion from multiple angles, indicating a clear view of the event.
  • Several participants mention difficulties accessing the video due to regional restrictions, which limits their ability to view the incident.
  • One participant provides alternative links to videos of the incident, suggesting that it may be available elsewhere online.
  • Another participant expresses uncertainty about the connection to the Feynman spaghetti problem, indicating that while it looks similar, they are not sure.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on whether the incident is an example of the Feynman spaghetti problem, and there is uncertainty regarding the details of the video and the pole's breakage.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include missing visual evidence for some participants due to regional restrictions, which may affect their understanding of the incident.

No idea, I can't see anything but one blurry picture of the pole. Did it break into 3 pieces?

It is a video. Maybe you do not have the right plug-in?

The pole is shown breaking into three pieces, in slow motion, from several angles.

It says I can't watch it because of the region I live in. Guess we can't watch it here in the U.S.

Sorry, that must be because it is on the BBC.

It must be somewhere on the interweb you can see it. The competitor is Lazaro Borges, at the Olympic Games in London, 8 August 2012.

It looks like it could be the same effect, but I'm not sure.
