Visual Effects of Light Travel: Analyzing "Journey to Edge of Universe

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the visual effects of light travel as depicted in the documentary "Journey to the Edge of the Universe." Participants are analyzing specific scenes at the 43:12 and 1:02:20 marks, questioning their accuracy in representing theoretical concepts related to light travel, such as Terrell rotation, angular compression, Doppler shift, and the headlight effect.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire about the meaning of "light travel" and its implications for visual effects at relativistic speeds.
  • There are mentions of specific visual effects that should occur as one approaches the speed of light, including Terrell rotation, angular compression, Doppler shift, and the headlight effect.
  • Some participants assert that the scenes in question do not accurately depict these effects.
  • There are requests for explanations regarding what should theoretically be seen in those scenarios.
  • Questions arise about the color changes depicted in the video, specifically whether they align with expectations from the Doppler effect, with some suggesting a rainbow effect should be observed instead.
  • Links to external resources are provided for further exploration of the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express disagreement regarding the accuracy of the visual effects shown in the documentary, with no consensus reached on what should be seen theoretically.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined "light travel," and there are unresolved questions about the specific visual effects and their theoretical implications. The discussion includes varying interpretations of the Doppler effect and its representation in the video.

Hi,

Can someone please anlayse the visual effects for light travel in the documentary 'Journey to edge of the universe'

Especially around the 43:12 and the 1:02:20 mark.

Can you also tell me if it is or is not an accurate depiction of what we should be seeing theoretically?

So as you approach the speed of light you start to see some visual effects, terrell rotation, angular compression, doppler shift, headlight effect. Are the scenes that I have mentioned an accurate depiction of any of these effects?

No.

Can you explain why and what I should be seeing?

Thanks, are the colours meant to change as you approach c as seen in the video? like green then blue then purple etc. Shouldn't we just see a rainbow effect due to the doppler effect?
