AI Thread Summary
The discussion highlights concerns over a Craigslist seller who copied a product description from an original listing, leading to potential buyer deception. A Google search reveals the actual price of the item, a coffee table, is $188, while the seller lists it for $500. This raises issues of dishonesty in online marketplaces, emphasizing the need for buyer vigilance. Additionally, a related incident is mentioned where a seller was targeted for robbery after listing an item, underscoring the risks for sellers as well. There is a note that the primary complaint about the coffee table on Overstock relates to assembly, suggesting that if the item is already assembled, it may justify the higher price for some buyers.

The mistake the seller did is, (s)he cut pasted the description from the original.

A google search of the description shows the item price is $188.

Yes. Very dishonest. It's a shame the level of dishonesty we have today.

Buyer beware, with just about anything on craigslist.

In my neck of the woods, a guy placed an ad on craigslist to sell a ring, but the "buyers" showed up at his house to rob and kill him. So...seller beware, too!

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
