AI Thread Summary
Protein synthesis is initiated by transcription factors that interact with DNA, influencing the transcription process. These factors can either activate or inhibit transcription, determining when proteins are produced. Various signals, including hormonal stimuli, play a crucial role in regulating gene expression in both bacteria and eukaryotes. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for grasping how the body responds to different physiological needs and environmental changes. For detailed examples of these processes, resources such as Albert's "Molecular Biology of the Cell" provide valuable insights.

Hi all,

I was just wondering, what stimulus activates protein synthesis? I already know the steps of protein synthesis but is there a particular mechanism that triggers the RNA polymerase to start transcription? In other words, how does the body know when to produce proteins? Is it possibly with hormones?

Many thanks,
Jay

Protein synthesis is controlled by transcription factors that bind to DNA to either promote or repress transcription.

Here's a chapter from Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell giving some examples of how various signals can turn genes on and off in bacteria and eukaryotes:
