The scope includes various subtopics within mechanical engineering, such as mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and specific applications like engine design and hydraulics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about which mechanical engineering books are worthwhile, citing concerns over cost.
  • Another participant requests more specificity regarding the type of mechanical engineering content desired.
  • A participant mentions an interest in mechanical design.
  • One participant emphasizes the vastness of the mechanical engineering field and the need for more specific topics to provide relevant recommendations.
  • Participants suggest specific areas of interest, including engine design, steam engines, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
  • Den Hartog's books are recommended by one participant as a starting point.
  • Another participant suggests that a foundational understanding of thermodynamics is essential, recommending the book by Moran and Shapiro, along with Munson for fluid mechanics.
  • A participant acknowledges the suggestions and expresses gratitude for the recommendations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on specific book recommendations, as the discussion remains open-ended with various suggestions and areas of interest presented.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights the need for more specific criteria to narrow down book recommendations, indicating that the vastness of the mechanical engineering field complicates the selection process.

Hi people does anyone here know of any good mechanical engineering books. I want to get one but i don't really know what's good or not , i don't really want to waste the money on getting something that isn't very good, the prices aren't cheap for some of those books.
thanks people.

ehm..
something more into specific??

i have been getting interested into mechanical design for the moment

Mechanical engineering is a HUGE topic. There are thousands and thousands of books written about all the different areas of mechanical engineering. Even saying "mechanical design" is incredibly vague. You can't give us any more of an idea of what you are looking for?

um engine design, steam engines, pneumatics, hydraulics stuff like that

I would start with Den Hartog's books.

Well, it sounds like your first stop should be in thermodynamics, which means you probably ought to get Moran and Shapiro:

Basic fluid mechanics is also something you would probably want to know for engines and definitely hydraulics and pneumatics. One of the more popular books is Munson:
