What Are the Best Fluid Mechanics Textbooks for Self-Study?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers around recommendations for fluid mechanics textbooks suitable for self-study, particularly for a physics student with limited formal exposure to the subject. Josh, the original poster, inquires about the quality of "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics" by Rothmayer and Munson and expresses interest in textbooks that include student solution manuals. Participants suggest "Transport Phenomena" by Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot as a valuable resource. The consensus indicates that both texts are beneficial for understanding fluid mechanics fundamentals.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of fluid dynamics principles
  • Familiarity with Bernoulli's equation
  • Ability to engage with engineering mathematics
  • Access to student solution manuals for guided learning
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics" by Rothmayer and Munson for self-study effectiveness
  • Explore "Transport Phenomena" by Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot for comprehensive coverage of fluid mechanics
  • Look into additional textbooks with student solution manuals for enhanced learning
  • Investigate online resources or courses that complement textbook learning in fluid mechanics
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering disciplines, self-learners interested in fluid mechanics, and educators seeking supplementary materials for teaching fluid dynamics concepts.

Hello! My name is Josh Currently going into third year physics. My university does not offer a single course involving fluids except the most basic intro to bernoulli's equation. So, I thought I would make it my own project for the summer to learn some fundamentals.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some textbooks preferably with a students solution manual that I may learn from. I was looking at fundamentals of fluid mechanics by Rothmayer and Munson however, not sure if this is a "good" book on the subject. I am not terribly worried about the math or if it is more of an engineering text; I could use some practice with that as well.

Thank you! Any help will be welcomed!
