What are the connections between physics and machine learning?

I'm repairing my rusty math skills. I'm interested in machine learning and data mining. I see that a lot of things like Gibbs, MCMC, and whatnot actually come from physics hence I'm here

Hello fellow Physics enthusiasts, I am an aeronautical engineering graduate (Bachelor's) who is interested in Physics and Mathematics, and I have been re-learning all the basics.
