Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the unusual Doppler radar images captured during a specific event, with participants exploring potential causes for the observed phenomena. The scope includes meteorological interpretations, speculative theories, and analysis of the radar data.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest the radar anomalies could be related to NASCAR events originating from Indianapolis.
  • Others propose that the radar patterns might be due to jet streams disrupting storm formations, or simply radar errors.
  • A few participants express confusion about the images, questioning what is considered "weird" in the radar data.
  • One participant mentions that the radar images could reflect thermals, which are bubbles of warm air, although they question the size of such thermals.
  • Another participant cites a meteorologist's article attributing the radar patterns to birds, noting that such occurrences happen several times a year, though the timing seemed unusual.
  • Some participants raise the possibility of other explanations, including nuclear bombs and coronal mass ejections, while others challenge the plausibility of the bird theory due to the scale of the formations.
  • Weather data is discussed, with references to temperature, dew points, and local agricultural practices potentially influencing the radar readings.
  • Participants mention the need for further analysis of archived radar data from overlapping radar stations to clarify the anomalies.
  • There is a discussion about the typical anomalies experienced by NEXRAD radar sites, particularly around sunrise or sunset, which may explain some of the observed patterns.
  • One participant humorously suggests testing the radar data for whimsical shapes, indicating the playful nature of the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the cause of the radar images, with multiple competing theories remaining in discussion. Some lean towards the bird theory, while others question its validity based on the scale and timing of the observed phenomena.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the dependence on specific definitions of thermals and birds, as well as unresolved questions about the radar calibration and the exact nature of the anomalies. The discussion also highlights the variability in meteorological interpretations and the complexity of atmospheric phenomena.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to meteorology enthusiasts, radar technology specialists, and individuals curious about atmospheric phenomena and their interpretations.

I have seen flights of starlings that are huge, and as they lift they form the half-to full curve feature, as a part of lift off. Once I was in a parking lot in the mid Salt Lake Valley. I looked up to the mountains in the East. Suddenly and I mean suddenly, three huge forms appeared out of thin air. There were two large black circles and in the middle was a form like a circle with a couple of arms out of the bottom. These forms were at least two miles large stretching about 6 miles wide. They were out in front of Mt Olympus to the east of the city. In the next second they had disappeared again. I stood there and they reappeared, then disappeared. I called out to a woman nearby, and asked if she wanted to see something extraordinary. She stopped for a minute and when they reappeared, she cried out. I told her that my best guess was that they were flights of starlings, and they were turning in unison, so that when they went on edge they disappeared. We watched them for a few turns more. Their regularity was startling, and that very "startling" quality might be where their name "starling" comes from. Innocuous as it may sound, that stands as the most engaging natural phenomenon I have ever witnessed.
