What causes stars to appear to zigzag in the night sky?

How did you find PF?

I saw a star zigzagging. I googled it and saw someone else saw it too. In fact another in Ontario. I woke up looked at the sky at the sar and saw it was moving and quickly zig zagging in an odd way
