What Creative Mechanical Device Should You Model for Your CAD Project?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers around selecting a mechanical device for a CAD project requiring an assembly of 5-8 parts, with a modification to the design. Participants suggest various options, including a brake caliper and a 3D printer's x-y-z movement mechanism. The project is part of a final assignment for a mechanical engineering course, emphasizing the transition from simple modeling tasks to more complex assemblies. Previous projects mentioned include bearing blocks, gaskets, and even a birdhouse, highlighting the range of creativity allowed in the assignment.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of CAD software for 3D modeling
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical components and assemblies
  • Familiarity with design modification techniques
  • Experience with project requirements in engineering courses
NEXT STEPS
  • Research CAD software options like SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor
  • Explore mechanical design principles for assemblies
  • Learn about modifying existing designs in CAD
  • Investigate creative mechanical devices suitable for modeling
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineering students, CAD designers, and anyone interested in modeling mechanical assemblies for educational projects.

I have a cad project where i have to make an assembly of a mechanical device with 5-8 parts and I also have to make a modification to the device. I was thinking maybe a brake caliper but I am just curious what some of you think would be a good device to model?

What were some of the previous projects in the class for this assignment?

2D or 3D ?

This is our final project for the class. We do simple modeling for homework like bearing blocks and gaskets but this is the first assembly.

It is a 3d project

I guess I worded my question poorly. What were some of the previous final projects in previous classes?

Not really sure. I remember my teacher saying a previous student did a birdhouse. So when I say it has to be a mechanical part I am not saying that's a requirement, its just that I would rather model a mechanical part since I am going for a bsme. The only requirements are it has to be 5-8 parts and i have to modify the design in some way.

yea something similar to that. something smaller with less parts would be ideal

Why less parts? What year are you in school?

Personally, I'd try to get creative. Like, do the x-y-z movement mechanism for a 3-D printer (which could be used to fabricate the parts...).
