What Creative Mechanical Device Should You Model for Your CAD Project?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around suggestions for a CAD project involving the modeling of a mechanical device consisting of 5-8 parts, with an emphasis on potential modifications to the design. Participants explore various ideas and seek insights into previous projects undertaken in similar assignments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant proposes modeling a brake caliper as a potential device for the project.
  • Another participant inquires about previous projects completed in the class for similar assignments.
  • There are questions regarding whether the project is 2D or 3D, with clarification that it is a 3D project.
  • Some participants express a preference for modeling mechanical parts, citing a personal interest in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
  • A suggestion is made to consider a creative approach, such as modeling the x-y-z movement mechanism for a 3D printer.
  • One participant mentions a previous project involving a birdhouse, indicating that while mechanical parts are preferred, they are not a strict requirement.
  • There is a discussion about the desire for smaller projects with fewer parts, although the reasoning behind this preference is questioned.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific device to model, and multiple ideas and preferences are expressed, indicating a variety of competing views regarding the project scope.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention limitations regarding the number of parts and the requirement for modifications, but there are no specific constraints outlined beyond these parameters.

Who May Find This Useful

Students or individuals involved in CAD projects, particularly those focused on mechanical design and assembly, may find this discussion relevant.

I have a cad project where i have to make an assembly of a mechanical device with 5-8 parts and I also have to make a modification to the device. I was thinking maybe a brake caliper but I am just curious what some of you think would be a good device to model?

What were some of the previous projects in the class for this assignment?

2D or 3D ?

This is our final project for the class. We do simple modeling for homework like bearing blocks and gaskets but this is the first assembly.

It is a 3d project

I guess I worded my question poorly. What were some of the previous final projects in previous classes?

Not really sure. I remember my teacher saying a previous student did a birdhouse. So when I say it has to be a mechanical part I am not saying that's a requirement, its just that I would rather model a mechanical part since I am going for a bsme. The only requirements are it has to be 5-8 parts and i have to modify the design in some way.

yea something similar to that. something smaller with less parts would be ideal

Why less parts? What year are you in school?

Personally, I'd try to get creative. Like, do the x-y-z movement mechanism for a 3-D printer (which could be used to fabricate the parts...).
