Click For Summary
Waves are considered "in phase" when their crests and troughs align, meaning they move in the same direction and have matching points. This alignment results in constructive interference, enhancing the amplitude of the combined waves. The discussion revolves around confirming the understanding of this concept, with participants expressing uncertainty about the definition. Clarification is sought regarding the implications of waves being in phase. Understanding this principle is essential for grasping wave behavior in physics.

Why do you think so?

I'm really not sure what it means for waves to be "in phase"

Ah. Well that would be a good start. Textbook?

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
