SUMMARY

The term "mode of existence," as defined by Zimmermann in 1953, refers to the transformation in the way organisms adapt and survive in their environments. This includes changes in behavior, such as foraging patterns, and genetic adaptations within populations. The Oxford English Dictionary defines "mode" as a method of proceeding in any activity, emphasizing the dynamic nature of how organisms interact with their surroundings. Understanding this concept is crucial for comprehending evolutionary processes and ecological adaptations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of evolutionary biology concepts
  • Familiarity with ecological adaptation mechanisms
  • Knowledge of genetic variation in populations
  • Awareness of behavioral ecology principles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of evolutionary biology and natural selection
  • Explore genetic adaptation mechanisms in various species
  • Study behavioral ecology and its impact on survival strategies
  • Investigate case studies of organisms adapting to environmental changes
USEFUL FOR

Students of biology, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and anyone interested in understanding the adaptive strategies of organisms in changing environments.

According Zimmermann in 1953 "evolution is the transformation of the form and mode of existence" so I want want understand what is mode of existence ?

Definition of mode from the OED:
Oxford English Dictionary said:
A way or manner in which something is done or takes place; a method of proceeding in any activity, business, etc.

Or - in more commonplace terms 'change in how or where an organism "makes a living" ' -- like foraging for food at different times of the day, or developing tolerance for drier environments. The change is a genetic change in a population as well.
