What is the "driving force" to increasing the internal resistance of a battery

Homework Statement




A brand new battery almost have no resistance, but overtime when the internal resistance is great enough, the battery "dies". So my question is, what is causing the internal resistance to increase? Why can't resistance be the same forever?
