Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of addiction to Physics Forums (PF), exploring when one might consider seeking professional help for such an addiction. Participants share their experiences and perceptions regarding their engagement with the forum, touching on themes of personal habits, social interactions, and the impact on daily life.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that becoming a mentor on PF could indicate a level of engagement that may be considered excessive.
  • Several users describe their frequent visits to PF, with one noting they are subscribed to over 2,300 threads and check for updates multiple times a day.
  • There are humorous references to the idea of needing to "get a life" due to excessive PF usage, with some participants joking about withdrawal symptoms after short absences from the forum.
  • One participant questions whether their past behavior of refreshing the forum multiple times an hour constitutes addiction.
  • Another participant humorously suggests that the level of engagement of a specific user, Evo, could be a benchmark for unhealthy PF usage.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about what constitutes normal versus excessive engagement with PF, with one asking if clicking "check mail" frequently is typical behavior.
  • There are playful exchanges about the nature of PF and its potential to be addictive, with some participants joking about the seriousness of the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what constitutes PF addiction, with multiple competing views and humorous takes on the topic. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the threshold for seeking help or recognizing excessive use.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying degrees of self-awareness about their PF habits, with some acknowledging potential issues while others dismiss the idea of addiction. The conversation includes playful banter that may obscure serious reflections on the topic.

Holy Jeez. Mr Impatient. You couldn't even wait for the poll? Well, that explains why I've become unfulifilled with our lovemaking.

But, I can always stop

I am moving to facebook shortly (school time -> facebook and summer time -> pf)

lovemaking?--what are you talking about?---

--there's football on right now

(bears and chiefs)

I go on when I get into work, I go on before lunch, I go on after lunch, I go on before leaviong for the day, I go on when I get home, I go one before I go to bed.

Often I go on right after having been on, in the event that someone has posted something interesting since the last time I checked my subscribed list.

I am currently subscribed to 2,304 threads.

Hm. this took serveral minutes to write. I wonder if anyone's writyten anything new since I last looked...

Wasn't there a Dr. Seuss story about this?

"I go on when in a box,
I go on when with a fox.
I go on when in a house,
I go on when with a mouse."

Seriously though.. I can quit anytime I want to. I don't have a problem. Seriously I don't...

(I better go to main page and refresh in case there were any new posts in the last 30 seconds.)

I voted "other." There's NEVER too much PF.

Tonight I'm clicking "check mail" in my Inbox every few minutes, looking for new postings in my subscribed forums. Is this normal?

I am working on a new project and boss does not have enough time to give me proper specifications/visios.

Whenever it happens (or I need to solve an ambiguous problem), my addition to internet increases :shy: Some sort of depression?

I was on PF for whole day today with five minute-ten minute intervals and I started to get the shakes ... :(

I guess I also need a life
