AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around finding a website or software that allows users to create optics setups, including components like lasers and mirror mounts, with basic light tracing capabilities. The original poster recalls that the tool was free and likely utilized WebGL, suggesting the THREE.js module as a potential option. There is also a suggestion that the thread may be better suited for a computer science or programming forum if the tool isn't specifically optics-related. Overall, the focus is on identifying the right software for drawing optics configurations. The conversation emphasizes the need for clarity on the specific tool used previously.

TL;DR Summary
optics setup drawing
Some time ago, I drew a simple drawing. But now I can't remember how I drew it. Did I use a software or a website?
I remember I could choose some optics components, like the small laser in the image, the mirror mount, etc.
It can do basic light tracing.
It was free.

I'm pretty sure WebGL (Javascript) is up to the task. Specifically you might look into the THREE.js module. On the other hand it sounds like you're searching for a particular piece of software. Anyway, good luck.

EDIT: BTW, ATT: moderators. This thread should probably be moved to the computer science/programming forum if the tool in question isn't directly optics-related that is.

Thread 'A quartet of epi-illumination methods'
Well, it took almost 20 years (!!!), but I finally obtained a set of epi-phase microscope objectives (Zeiss). The principles of epi-phase contrast is nearly identical to transillumination phase contrast, but the phase ring is a 1/8 wave retarder rather than a 1/4 wave retarder (because with epi-illumination, the light passes through the ring twice). This method was popular only for a very short period of time before epi-DIC (differential interference contrast) became widely available. So...
I am currently undertaking a research internship where I am modelling the heating of silicon wafers with a 515 nm femtosecond laser. In order to increase the absorption of the laser into the oxide layer on top of the wafer it was suggested we use gold nanoparticles. I was tasked with modelling the optical properties of a 5nm gold nanoparticle, in particular the absorption cross section, using COMSOL Multiphysics. My model seems to be getting correct values for the absorption coefficient and...
