Where Can I Find a High Voltage DC 30kv - 40kv Generator for My Experiment?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for a high voltage DC generator, specifically in the range of 30kV to 40kV, for an experiment. Participants explore options for sourcing such equipment and share safety considerations related to high voltage applications.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) seeks a high voltage DC adjustable generator and expresses frustration at only finding low-cost voltage boosters online.
  • One participant questions the power requirements and the purpose of the experiment, noting that high voltage can be safe under certain conditions, such as in battery-powered bug zappers.
  • Another participant offers to sell a generator for $20,000, which is met with skepticism and humor from others.
  • Concerns are raised about the lethality of high voltage combined with significant current, emphasizing the need for trained individuals to handle such equipment.
  • The OP clarifies that the experiment is focused on electrostatics and intends to use low amperage, dismissing the suggestion of using a bug zapper as inadequate for their needs.
  • Some participants express frustration over perceived lack of knowledge in the responses and reiterate the need for specific information regarding power or current requirements.
  • One participant suggests using a voltage divider with a bug zapper if it meets the voltage requirements, but the OP insists this does not align with their needs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express disagreement regarding the adequacy of suggested solutions, particularly the use of bug zappers. There is no consensus on where to find the desired high voltage generator, and the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not provide specific details about the power requirements or the exact specifications needed for the generator, which may limit the effectiveness of the suggestions made.

Hi all

Trying to carry out an experiment and need a high voltage supply
Looking for say upto 40kv dc adjustable generator been looking on the net and only able to find low cost voltage boosters on eBay

Or if anyone know of a good website to try

Any help would be much apreciated

Thanks...Niki

How much power do you require? What are you trying to accomplish?

High voltage by itself can be safe. For example, battery powered bug zappers. Indeed, one of those bug zappers may provide what you need for your experiment.

But high voltage plus significant current capabilities can be lethal. Only well trained people should work with it.

It’s an experiment to show the effects of electrostatics so will only be using low amperage I’m quite aware that high voltage and current would be leathal, so I won’t stick the electrodes on my tongue thumbs up for the advice.

If I wanted to buy a bug zapper and butcher it to bits for parts I would get one, the description in the post is variable high voltage dc upto 40kv

Waste of time post thanks

Is that where you bought that bannana bike from?

Once again someone who wants to leave a post with no knowledge

You got replies from two professional electrical engineers, at least one of them working with high voltage systems... and you didn't answer the question about the power (or current) you are interested in.

If the bug zapper has sufficient voltage you can add a voltage divider to make it adjustable.

Yes a bug zapper may have the required voltage but that’s not what I need!

Forget it obviously no one knows where to get such a device on here

The OP says his question is answered. Thread closed.
