Where is the point of maximum compressive stress in bi-axial bending?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The point of maximum compressive stress in bi-axial bending is identified at point 'A', located at the bottom right corner of the beam. This conclusion is drawn from observational analysis, confirming that the initial assumption holds validity. The discussion also highlights the importance of accurately identifying units for moments of inertia, which is crucial for precise calculations in structural engineering. Overall, the simplicity of the solution does not undermine its correctness.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of bi-axial bending mechanics
  • Familiarity with stress analysis in beams
  • Knowledge of moments of inertia calculations
  • Basic principles of structural engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of bi-axial bending in structural analysis
  • Learn about calculating moments of inertia for various beam shapes
  • Explore advanced stress analysis techniques in engineering
  • Investigate real-world applications of compressive stress in beams
USEFUL FOR

Structural engineers, civil engineering students, and professionals involved in beam design and analysis will benefit from this discussion.

Hi all,

I've attempted this question however my solution seems too simple..? I have taken the point 'A' (bottom right corner of beam) as the point with max compressive stress, I am not sure if this is correct. I have just assumed this by observation.

Everything looks OK. You caught the typo in the units for the moments of inertia; very good.

Well that's great news! For some reason I thought my solution seemed to simple!

Thanks for clearing that up!
