Which engineering branch is good for research works in future?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around selecting an engineering branch with strong future research potential after completing a B.Tech. The user expresses interest in Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science, seeking advice on their choices. Another participant shares a similar interest in pursuing research, particularly in Computer Science, though they acknowledge that many choose it for its lucrative job prospects rather than research opportunities. A key point raised is the significant research potential in Computer Science, especially in data mining and algorithms, which are crucial due to the increasing volume of data and the need for effective analysis. The complexity of data types and the demand for expertise in extracting valuable insights create numerous research opportunities in this field. Overall, all mentioned branches have active research areas, and exploring relevant publications could provide further clarity on future prospects.

I am from India..
I want a branch which has significant room for research works in future after B tech Mtec and so on..
Right now my preference is Electrical and electronics,Electronics &Ccommunication,Electrical Engineering, Computer Science.(need further suggestions from u)... Is it good or i have to modify it??
reply fast, i have only one day to fix my choices>>

Wow - you and i are exactly in the same situation. I also want to deviate from the standard job and do a job in research. I am thinking of taking computer science. i think it might have good research opportunities but not sure - wait for experts to help you

Ok jd12345!
why you think that CSE will do as you are wishing(favourable for research in future)..
However most of the students put it in top of their preference order because of money, since it gets the best placement in every NIT, IIT etc...

I don't know! As I said i am no expert. Maybe I have wrong ideas about what computer science involves. I am not sure

Hey vkash and welcome to the forums.

All areas you mentioned have a lot of active problems, and it might help if you got a feel for the problems by checking any associated research publications in that respective field.

For computer science, one major area relates to data mining and associated algorithms.

The algorithms for data mining are a hot topic of research and the reasoning is that nowadays there is a tonne of data, but not enough expertise to analyze and make sense of it.

Because of the many kinds of data in terms of structure and type, and because of the varied applications and domains for the data, if you couple this with the complexity and difficulty of finding patterns in the data, then you begin to see the kinds of problems and opportunities this presents for researchers.

Data is becoming a new kind of currency where having the right data to get the right information is something that helps the end means of the investigator whether they are a fortune 500 company, scientific inquirer (like a university), government department, insurance company or bank, or otherwise.

Because of the diversity and the complexity of not only extracting good information to use, but to also take into account the subtleties of the specific domains, data mining presents lots of challenges and thus opportunities.

Bit Britain-specific but I was wondering, what's the best path to take for A-Levels out of the following (I know Y10 seems a bit early to be thinking about A-levels, but my choice will impact what I do this year/ in y11) I (almost) definitely want to do physics at University - so keep that in mind... The subjects that I'm almost definitely going to take are Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and I'm taking a fast track programme which means that I'll be taking AS computer science at the end...
After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
